After the Flood: What Helped Us Clean Up After a Pipe Burst

Christmas night, we had a pipe burst behind the washer & dryer, and about 60% of the first floor was an inch deep in water. The carpet was a swamp. the laundry room, kitchen, dining room, living room, and Mark's office were all flooded. We are still dealing with the aftermath, but after we turned the water off and called a plumber, we had to figure out how to get the water out of the house, and then clean up the mess. We could not have done it without these products. If you buy from the link I provide, I get a small commission to add to my pots & pans fund. But

research what models and brands work for you.

  • First, the shop vac. This thing got the water out of the house fast. We still needed professionals to dry the carpet, but this was amazing. We borrowed it from our neighbor- and I think we need one for ourselves.

  • Second, the hoover carpet shampooer. After the pros came and dried our carpet, it still smelled funky. After giving the carpet a once-over with this, NO SMELL. Since we got pros in fast, we might be able to save the carpet- but even if not, we can't get restorers here for WEEKS. And we don't want to live with a yucky smell.

  • Next, Folex. I don't know if you have ever used this, but it gets out blood, wine, pet urine, dirt, whatever. It's a great spot remover.

  • Last but not least, the Dupray steam cleaner. Did I mention that because of the cold, we had the chickens in the breezeway? Yep. We put down cardboard and brought in their coop. After I moved them back to the henhouse and removed the cardboard, the tile floor was still.... yucky. This thing let me clean and sanitize it in a snap. It also has an extension for the grout!
